Berner Street, now named Henriques Street, was where Jack the Ripper committed his third murder, in Dutfield’s Yard. Walking along Berner Street, away from Commercial Road, Dutfield’s Yard was on the right, just before Fairclough Street. Running parallel with Berner Street, and also approached from Commercial Road, was Batty Street. One year earlier, in 1887, Israel Lipski murdered Miriam Angel at No. 16 Batty Street. The following year, 1888, Lipski’s surname was frequently being used by local East Enders as an offensive word to insult any member of the Jewish populace.
