Beginning at Bethnal
Green Road and running parallel with
Commercial Street, Brick Lane dropped down
towards Whitechapel Road, stopping short at Osborn Street. Entered from
Commercial Street via the first section of
Hanbury Street, it was dominated by
the Black Eagle Brewery, corner of Brick Lane and Black Eagle Street. Although
Brick Lane included a few insignificant doss-houses, it contained a public house
that would forever be linked with Jack the Ripper. Situated at the corner of
Thrawl Street and Brick Lane was the Frying Pan public house. About three hours
before her death, at 12. 30 a.m., an intoxicated Polly Nichols staggered from
this public house and was last encountered alive at the corner of Osborn Street
and Whitechapel Road. |
