Jack the Ripper

Whitechapel 1888

Buck’s Row, now named Durward Street, was the scene of what is generally accepted as the first murder committed by Jack the Ripper. Buck’s Row was a narrow street, running parallel with Winthrop Street, which in turn ran parallel with Whitechapel Road. Just over three weeks before the Buck’s Row murder, Martha Tabram had been found dead at George Yard Buildings, George Yard, Whitechapel High Street, stabbed thirty-nine times. Martha had earlier left Mary Ann Connolly, who took a soldier along a parallel street, Angel Alley, to service him. Later, Mary Ann Connolly could not identify either the soldier she had been with or his companion that Martha had taken along George Yard. Although the police, at the time, did not link this murder to the Buck’s Row murder, speculation has since abounded that Martha Tabram may have actually been the first victim of Jack the Ripper.
