Next to Dorset Street, Flower & Dean Street was the most squalid common doss-house street in Spitalfields. Originally conceived and planned by two Whitechapel builders, John Flower and Gowan Dean, it could be entered from either Commercial Street, Brick Lane or George Street from Thrawl Street. Up to her death, Elizabeth Stride lodged at 32 Flower & Dean Street. At 55 Flower & Dean Street was Cooney’s, the most notorious doss-house of the street and, prior to her death, Catherine Eddowes’ usual address. At 56 Flower & Dean Street was another grim doss-house, The White House. Before her death, Polly Nichols had briefly lodged there. |
