Jack the Ripper

Whitechapel 1888

The Hanbury Street section where Jack the Ripper committed his second murder ran from Brick Lane towards Commercial Street. The murder was committed in the backyard of 29 Hanbury Street, which was midway along the northern section of the street. Originally, Hanbury Street was actually four separate streets. The section from Commercial Street to Brick Lane was known as Brown’s Lane. Then, from Brick Lane to Spital Street, it was known as Montague Street. The Spital Street to Great Garden Street (formerly High Street) section was known as Preston Street. And finally, the section between Great Garden Street to Baker’s Row was known as Church Street. On March 31, 1876, all these four streets were merged to become Hanbury Street.
