Jack the Ripper

Whitechapel 1888

Miller’s Court was the scene of what is generally accepted as the fifth and final murder committed by Jack the Ripper. Approached from Dorset Street, later named Duval Street, Miller’s Court was a squalid cul-de-sac, housing some of Spitalfields pitiful prostitutes, including the final victim who lived at 13 Miller’s Court. Originally named Datchet Street, corrupted in due course to Dorset Street, this reputedly most dangerous street was often referred to by the locals as ‘the street’ or ‘dossers’ street’. There were doss-houses on one side, furnished rooms on the other.  John McCarthy, an Irishman, owned all the furnished rooms, including those in Miller’s Court. A brutal bully, McCarthy was allegedly having a sexual relationship with the last victim prior to her death.
